Featuring a melting pot of American and European stars, Bertolucci's impassioned epic centres on the intense relationship between two friends, Alfredo Berlinghieri (Robert De Niro) from a landowning family and Olmo Dalcò (Gérard Depardieu) a peasant, who live under Fascism and Communism in 20th-century Parma, Italy. Born on the same day, the two are bound by a close childhood friendship but are separated by social chasms and opposite destinies as they grow up during the turbulent interwar years. Bertolucci was only 34 years old when he crafted this multinational, and yet distinctly Italian opus which covers approximately 70 years of Italian social and political history.
